Folic Acid Alliance Ontario What We Do

Formed in 1996, the Folic Acid Alliance Ontario is an alliance of several health-related organizations committed to reducing the incidence of neural tube defects by promoting the consumption of folic acid. Together, members of the Alliance are committed to educating women and health care providers about the benefits of taking folic acid before conception, in order to decrease the number of babies born with neural tube defects.

The Folic Acid Alliance Ontario has developed a province-wide public awareness and education campaign to promote the consumption of folic acid. The campaign is targeted to women between the ages of 18 and 45 and health care providers. Our goal is to increase the number of women taking a daily multivitamin containing folic acid. We are communicating directly with health care providers, to ensure that they are recommending adequate consumption of folic acid and are providing important information to their patients and clients. We will also be relying on public health units and other community health organizations to help us deliver the message to women across Ontario through their own community action.
